We’re committed to ensuring a sustainable future for small independent family-run farms, using the traditional flat deck production method, as we believe their knowledge and experience is too special to lose. For this reason, we use methods that can be traced back to the roots of free range egg production.
What is traditional free range egg farming?
In a nutshell, traditional free range egg farming is pretty much how most people would expect their free range eggs to be produced. However, the industry is currently changing at a rapid rate, meaning that many large producers are now using increasingly modern methods, to be able to supply you with your free range eggs at ever decreasing prices.
Most consumers have no idea of the difference between the main systems – flat deck and multi-tier. We want to help put this right for two important reasons:
- We strongly believe that people should be able to make an informed decision when buying their eggs
- If people aren’t given the opportunity to make an informed purchase and support independent family farms using traditional methods, then these farmers’ knowledge and experience will be lost forever

So what’s the difference?
Multi-tier – these eggs are produced in large multi-tier houses, with multiple levels. The extra levels increase the available floor area in the shed, allowing the farmer to house many more birds in the same size house. Other benefits include reduced feed consumption and reduced labour costs.
Flat deck – all of our eggs are produced in sheds with just one level, a method that is as old as free range egg farming itself. We believe that this provides a better environment for our girls and allows them more opportunity to head outside, helping us to produce exceptional quality eggs.
Love, care, freedom and fresh air is at the heart of everything we do at The Traditional Free Range Egg Company and the flat deck system is integral to this. We know that this results in extra special, award-winning eggs.
With both Great Taste and Taste of the West heaping praise upon our Free Collection over recent years, we will continue to farm in the way we believe in. Our hens, ducks, quails and geese will carry on producing the finest free range eggs for you and your family – Rambling, Waddling, Foraging, Dabbling and Naturally Free as ever…
